Laura Bernfield was more than just a nurse and a teacher. She was a cherished friend and mentor in the Monticello community, deeply committed to her team and patients at IU Health White Memorial Hospital as well as her students at Twin Lakes High School.

When she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, she not only considered her own situation and her family's, but also focused on ensuring the continued success of the health sciences educational programs she had diligently developed over her 25-year teaching career for the benefit of local students interested in healthcare careers.

Thanks to $50,000 in support from the IU Health Foundation and close cooperation among the school, the career cooperative, and the White Memorial team, a newly renovated Health Science Education classroom at the Twin Lakes Career and Technical Building in Monticello was officially dedicated in Bernfield’s honor on Wednesday, April 10.
